The truth is probably somewhere in the middle; I’m sure she was a pain to teach, although I taught second language students for 10 years and really don’t see why you have to see someone’s lips to know if they are speaking correctly. But that wasn’t really my point. I agree that Quebecers are not like the Taliban, but must disagree that they (or English Canadians, or anyone else) never can be. People are people, and history has too many examples of people being carried away by irrational fear and hysteria to be complacent that it “can’t happen here”. When we start making exceptions to tolerance for something as trivial as a piece of clothing, it always opens the door to exceptions for things less trivial and more sinister. If we are supposed to be an example to the world, it’s surely better to make a little extra accommodation in a case like this, and open the door instead to dialogue and understanding of alternate points of view. Anyway, even if she keeps the veil, her daughters certainly won’t, and we’ll have the benefit of whatever unique contribution she and they can make to our society as a whole.

Well written comment. I’m just a little bit surprised that you didn’t research that story a little better than that. That she was expulsed from the classroom is only the final chapter of the story. The previous chapters talked about how the teacher and the other students tried to accomodate her, to discuss with her, to share their point of view. The more thay talked the more fanatic she became about it. The last drop was the fact that she asked for the men to turn around while she was speaking. My guess is that she was too disruptive for the class and had to be sent away. The journalist in the Globe didn’t do a good job at reporting the facts.

Also, your analogy with Jews during WWII is a bit far fetched. Quebec is not Afghanistan and quebecers are nor like the talibans and will never be. You should know Glen, nothing is either black or white.
